Stealing
Hello!
When great researchers study a topic, the first thing they do is get to that library and see what others have done. The benefits are two-fold. You will not waste your time reinventing that particular wheel, and it revs up the curiosity engine.
This post is inspired because I re-read a self-help book. The book had a quiz to determine how your life was going to that point. Mine was going well, but I could see I did better from my marked-up old book the last time. So, like a passable student, I did my research. My thesis question is, what is different now?
The answer is work. Well, projects. I am much more regularly doing things that I am drawn to. If you notice something, your brain stops and goes DING DING DING. It’s time for some research. Think of it like making a cake. Steal first, see what else is out there, read recipes (articles or books) ask your friends, then take that and mix it up with your own experiences.
I love cake! Now, you may think that is the end of the story; however, if I consider it more I may ask myself, what do I love about cake? It's the pursuit of the cake-eating experience! Finding that cutie little bakery, A diamond in the rough. Silverware with engraved tulips and a comfortable velvet sofa that seems to envelop you in warmth when I hang out with friends.
Now consider the person behind the counter. They love cake as well. They are born into a family that makes cakes. They started experimenting as a little kid. Now, they are taking on the business in their own direction. They are into the science of cake. The stir of hospitality.
Do you ever hear the DING DING DING? Maybe it occurs when you're cooking or engaging in any activity that you find pleasurable. Whether you are a writer, a chef, or a puddle jumper, keep doing what you love and continue to check in with yourself and others. Think details! Ask yourself what specific part of your activity you enjoy the most and learn from others who have done it before.
Chase those details and your life will flourish.
